Common questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15%–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 20% increasingly the norm for good service. For counter service or takeout, 0%–10% is common and entirely optional.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette says pre-tax, and no one will fault you for it. Many people simply tip on the total for simplicity — on a typical bill the difference is under a dollar or two.

How does the round-up option work?

It rounds each person's share up to the nearest whole dollar, so nobody is fishing for coins. The extra few cents effectively become part of the tip.
